Accelerated Urban Water Supply Programme (AUWSP)
Objective
This programme was initiated in 1993-94 to provide safe and adequate water supply facilities to the entire population of the towns having population less than 20,000 as per 1991 Census.
Pattern of Finance
50%
by the Central Govt.
50% by the State Govt.
Criteria for Allocation of Funds To States
Allocation for each qualifying State shall be decided on the basis of following weightage:

- 50% on the population of such towns.
- 35% on the incidence of poverty in a State.
- 5% on the number of such towns in States.
- 10% in terms of population of such towns covered under the DPAP, DDP, HADP and Special Category Hilly States.

Priority
for Towns
Priority is to be given to the towns with
-
very low per capita supply of potable water
-
very distant or deep water sources,
-
drought prone areas,
-
excess salinity, fluoride, iron and arsenic content in the water sources, and
-
high incidence of water borne diseases.
The towns shall be selected by a Selection Committee constituted by the State Govt.
Coverage of The Scheme
There are 2151 such small towns in the entire country which have less than 20,000 population as per 1991 census. The Ministry has sanctioned schemes for 1244 towns at a cost of Rs. 1822.88 cores and released Rs.884.46 crores to the State as per the statement enclosed at Annexure-1. As per the reports received from State Governments, 1012 schemes have been commissioned. The up-to-date status of AUWSP schemes sanctioned in different states is enclosed as Annexure-II.
